With less than a month to go till catchers and pitchers show up to training for spring, we still see loads of action as teams add new players and try to grab the last few free agents. Of course, the White Sox are among the teams hoping to grab some talent, especially since they’ve lost the six seasons in a row.
Along the talented players still up for grabs, we see stars such as Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, leaving us with great action to come, especially since major teams aim to scoop them up. The White Sox GM, Rick Hahn is trying to emerge from the sinking hole they’ve been in for the last six seasons. He is hoping to rebuild the team with some new talent, which is set to be either Bryce or Manny.
However, as mentioned by Hahn himself, the odds posted by Las Vegas of who will get these players was devastating to the team as they didn’t even appear on the top 7 teams list who might land these players. However, this doesn’t stop Hahn from making the steps to converse with both players. He also added that the fans would be disappointed if they don’t at least try and that he aims to get at least one of these free agents.
The fact that the market has been slow for both Manny and Bryce is an advantage for the White Sox, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be easy to get, especially not since other major teams have their eye on these players as well. So, why are they so special and why would the White Sox even be interested? Well, lots of reasons actually.
Born in October of 1992, the 26-year-old right fielder started his professional career in 2010 when he was selected as the first overall choice for the 2010 Major League Draft. In the same year, Harper managed to get his name out there by winning the Golden Spike Award.
He went on to become one of the top 3 prospects, which was rated by MLB.com, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus. In 2012, he became the youngest selection for the All-Stars game and managed to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Just three years later, in 2015 Harper finished in a tie for the lead in the NL most runs during the MLB season.
As the national league’s most valuable player in 2015, Bryce had a great future ahead of him, becoming an important part of any team. However, in 2017, he slipped going into first base and damaged his knee, which has an effect on what he is capable of.
Manny Machado is a 26 year old shortstop and third baseman who joined the LA Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles where he became a notable player for the first time in MLB.
He managed to make his debut a little later than Harper in 2012, but still managed to get out and join the All-Stars team just a year later. In 2013, he came recognised as one of the best fielders and earned himself the Golden Glove Award along with the AL Platinum Glove in the same year as well as 2015.
